Hydrogen train replaces diesel train in Groningen

The province of Groningen will use hydrogen trains on the track in Groningen. The train is a good alternative to the existing diesel train, according to the province after a successful trial earlier this year. The first hydrogen trains will probably run on new rail routes to Stadskanaal and Germany from 2024.

It is the first time in the Netherlands that a hydrogen train is included in the timetable. Such a train is already running in Lower Saxony in Germany.

At the beginning of this year, the hydrogen train ran for two weeks on the track between Groningen and Leeuwarden. The test drives were without passengers at night. Acceleration, braking and refueling went without problems, there was also satisfaction with the fuel consumption. The train continued on time and turned out to be half quieter than the current diesel train, reports RTV North.

The hydrogen train is more expensive than the existing diesel train. That is why the provincial government hopes for support from the national government and the European Union.
