This project provides for the delivery of 1,250 megawatts of Quebec hydroelectricity to New York City from 2025.
This is a 25-year contract for Hydro-Quebec, the most important export contract of the state-owned company which has not disclosed its potential revenues, but Premier François Legault has spoken on the networks last September, an agreement in principle of more than 20 billion over 25 years.
The route selected includes an underground segment of 56.1 kilometers and an underwater segment of 1.6 kilometers, the vast majority in public rights-of-way. Eight municipalities in Montérégie will be affected: La Prairie, Saint-Philippe, Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, Saint-Édouard, Saint-Patrice-de-Sherrington, Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle and Lacolle.
The last section of the route will run along Fairbanks Creek to the Richelieu River, where the interconnection point with the American network is located. Further south there will be a 545-kilometer link between the Canada-US border and New York City.
Hydro-Québec invites the Quebec population concerned to learn more about the project during two open house meetings which will take place on December 8 in Lacolle and December 9 in Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur.
Once the line is in service, the Quebec line will be the subject of a partnership between Hydro-Quebec and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, which will benefit from economic spinoffs for 40 years.
