Hydro-Quebec will be the clean energy supplier of New York State for the next 25 years. An export deal to this effect was announced by the state-owned company on Monday.
Concretely, Hydro-Québec will supply one-fifth of the electricity used in New York City with electricity, for a total of 10.5 terawatt-hours. In terms of electricity production, this is the most important agreement signed by the supplier since its creation.
State Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled the deal as part of the Climate Week from New York. The exact amount paid to the crown corporation has not been released, but we are talking about “billions of dollars”.
To deliver electricity to the United States, a 545 km line will be built, including a 60 km portion in Quebec. Partly underwater, it will pass under Lake Champlain and the Hudson River to reach New York City. The link will be built quickly, so that it could be complete by 2025.
Through this agreement, New York would reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 3.9 metric tonnes annually. This would correspond to removing 44% of cars from the streets of New York, estimates Hydro-Quebec.
“Huge pride”
Delighted by the announcement, Premier François Legault considers it “a great step forward for Quebec, but also for our planet”.
“This is an important contribution from Quebec to reduce GHGs. The fight against climate change knows no borders, ”he commented in a post on his social networks.
