Hydro-Québec rates: expect more increases in the future, warns expert

Hydro-Québec may ask for other rate increases in the future to maintain its operations, believes the executive director of the Trottier Energy Institute, who warns that Thursday’s will be far from the only one.

The state-owned company went before the Régie de l’énergie to request increases of 3% for residences, 3.9% for its commercial customers and 3.3% for large industrial customers as of April 1, 2025.

“This is what the government voted for in the law, so I don’t see why Hydro-Québec would not have applied what the law allowed it to do,” stressed Louis Beaumier, executive director of the Trottier Energy Institute.

This is the first time since 2019 that Hydro-Québec has submitted its rate request to the Régie de l’énergie for rate increases.

“We must expect that there will be higher increases than that in the coming years since we will have to make up for the maintenance deficit in addition to the new production capacities that we will have to add,” the specialist said.
