Disney has announced that the hybrid release of Black Widow is a success. The film is the first from Marvel Studios to be released since the start of the corona crisis.
Because the corona crisis seems far from over, Marvel Studios and Disney have chosen to release the film together. The hybrid release took place on Disney+ as well as in theaters. And that seems to have done the film no harm.
Very strong debut
As we wrote in our weekly box office message last Sunday, the release of Black Widow a strong. The film had its best debut since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was shown in the cinema.
And that while it is a film that was shown in the cinema and on the streaming service Disney +. There, it yielded $60 million during its opening weekend. And that is a great return for Disney, since the studio can put the entire amount in its own pocket.
When it comes to US cinemas, about 55 percent of the box office goes to the studio and the rest to the cinema. That means that these kinds of releases could just continue for Disney, even after corona.
During its opening weekend, the film grossed $215 million. 80 million of that was grossed in US theaters, 60 million worldwide from Disney+ sales and 78 million at the worldwide box office.
