Hybrid cars are ‘cheap’, economical, not less luxurious

Toyota Corolla Cross become a hybrid car that is quite affordable. Usually, hybrid-powered cars are priced above IDR 500 million, now Toyota is presenting a hybrid version of the Corolla Cross at a price of IDR 497,800,000.

The price is almost IDR 500 million. But, Corolla Cross offers several distinctive advantages of an environmentally friendly hybrid car.

The Toyota Corolla Cross has been launched in the Indonesian automotive market. We had the opportunity to try Corolla Cross Hybrid for about three days of activities.

We did this trip with the Corolla Cross via toll roads to congested urban roads. How’s the driving impression? The following is a review of the Toyota Corolla Cross after we tried it.

1. Macho design

Before trying Toyota Corolla Cross on the highway, there’s nothing wrong with discussing it in terms of design first. Overall, the Toyota Corolla Cross features a macho design. The impression of an SUV shone when I first saw the Corolla Cross.

From the front, you can see the identity of the Toyota hybrid car. This Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid has the Toyota logo with a touch of blue background. The Toyota hybrid car’s distinctive logo is affixed to the front grille with a unique honeycomb design.

The modern impression can also be seen from the main lights. Toyota Corolla Cross already using LED headlights. The lamp design seems to give a sharp glare. Plus the blue accents on the Corolla Cross Hybrid lights seem to reflect that this car is environmentally friendly.

Slide to the side, there are 18-inch alloy rims. The rim design is also quite modern with a bi-colored touch. The sturdy character typical of SUVs can be seen from the strong over fenders and side skirts. The roof is equipped with a roof rail. The Toyota Corolla Cross has also been equipped with a power moonroof so that if it is opened it will present the impression of more spacious space to the cabin.

To the rear, the rear combination lamps are also quite modern with LED lights. Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid has an automatic power back door with a foot sensor. So to open the trunk door when you are carrying a lot of luggage, simply swing your feet under the rear bumper of the car. Only, we feel that the sensor feels less sensitive. Several times we swung the leg, the trunk door didn’t open, but when we tried to swing the leg a few more times then the trunk door opened automatically.

This urban SUV with a 5-passenger capacity is 4,460 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,620 mm high.

2. Interior is not less luxurious

Entering the car cabin, the impression of luxury is immediately felt. When you close the door, the car immediately feels silent. Soft touch material coats several parts of the car interior, from the steering wheel, seats to the dashboard. So it’s better to touch.

To adjust the driver’s seat, the electric setting button is available. The position of the steering wheel can also be adjusted with the tilt & telescopic feature.

Toyota Corolla Cross The Hybrid is equipped with an instrument panel juxtaposed with a 4.2-inch MID. In it there is a lot of information that the driver can use, such as the speed of the vehicle to the status of the current hybrid system. In this instrument panel there is no tachometer that measures engine speed (RPM). As a replacement, there is a needle that indicates whether the car is driving in an Eco condition that relies on electric power, or power that combines a gasoline engine and electric power, or is charging through a regenerative braking system, which is when the car decelerates, the wasted power is stored as electric power to the battery.

The status is also displayed in a graphic on the right instrument panel. There were pictures of the engine and battery. When the engine drives the wheels and charges to the battery, there will be arrows pointing from the engine to the front wheel and the battery. If only the electric motor works, there will be an arrow from the battery to the front wheel. And when it is decelerating, there will be an arrow from the front wheel to the battery which means that the hybrid system charges the battery from the braking result.

Move to the head unit, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is equipped with a 9-inch IPS display head unit. The first time the car starts, there will be a notification whether today is the odd or even date. This is a simple but useful feature so that the driver can adjust driving in odd-even areas. What’s unique again is the NFC feature that can read our electronic money balances. So, there’s no need to panic if your balance is not enough to access toll roads.

The head unit can accommodate radio media, Bluetooth, and Miracast, which can mirror Android phones to the head unit. The audio feature can also use voice commands.

To support comfort, the Toyota Corolla Cross uses a dual zone AC system. So, the temperature on the driver and passenger side can be adjusted differently according to individual tastes.

In the center console, as usual you will find the gear lever. There is also a drive mode button, EV mode, and Traction Control Off. However, you will not see the parking brake lever or button. Because the parking brake lever is on the left foot of the driver.

Sitting in the driver’s seat at the front is quite comfortable. The seat design has a kind of backrest on either side so it feels more comfortable.

Meanwhile, passengers in the second row can still feel comfortable with the AC grille behind the center console. Sitting in the second row also feels comfortable. For me, with a height of 178 cm, leg room and headroom is quite wide. Plus there is an armrest with cupholders.

There is a smart entry to open and close car keys without needing to touch the key and there is also an auto fold mirror.

3. Driving experience, economical but not stingy in energy

Like other keyless cars, to start the engine there is a Power button behind the steering wheel. The first impression of starting this car is surprise. I was amazed that there was no engine sound so I doubted whether the car had started or not.

In fact, if there is a word ‘Ready’ on the instrument panel, it means that the car is ready to go. Indeed, there is no engine sound because the electric motor is the first to work. The engine will start when needed.

For low speed, you can use EV Mode by pressing the button on the center console. EV mode will rely on electricity only if the electric power stored in the battery is deemed sufficient. However, when the car is traveling at more than 50 km / h, EV Mode will automatically deactivate and the petrol engine helps provide a boost. EV Mode also automatically turns off when the power stored in the battery is insufficient.

Ohiya, the Toyota Corolla Cross carries a 2ZR-FXE engine with a capacity of 1,798 cc 4-cylinder DOHC with VVT-i technology. The petrol engine alone is capable of producing a maximum power of 98 PS and 142 Nm of torque. The machine does not work alone because there is an electric motor capable of producing a maximum power of 72 PS and a torque of 162 Nm.

Toyota Corolla Cross there are three driving modes, ECO, Sport, and EV. When using Sport mode, the torque from the electric motor really helps boost the engine. Shooting to high speed did not take long. The power boost to the wheels feels quite large, knowing that the engine is also supported by an electric motor that helps increase power.

Even though the driving sensation is very fun to be speeded up, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid still prioritizes fuel efficiency. Thanks to the electric power stored in the battery, the gasoline that is drawn by the engine is as economical as possible.

Note on the MID screen after traveling along 100.1 km for 2 hours 3 minutes, the fuel consumption reaches 22.4 km / liter. That figure includes when we tried to go aggressively and got stuck.

4. Simple but Useful Features

Especially for the Indonesian market, the Toyota Corolla Cross is equipped with simple but useful features. As we mentioned before, on the head unit screen when it is first turned on, there will be notification information for odd or even dates. This reminder is very useful for motorists on Jakarta roads where there are regulations on restrictions on motor vehicles with an odd-even system.

Another simple feature is the NFC system. This feature can read electronic money balances, so you can check your E-Money balance before accessing toll roads.

Regarding safety, the Corolla Cross is equipped with a package of passive and active safety features. Starting from ABS + EBD brakes, 3 point seatbelt with pretensioner and force limiter, 7-airbags, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Emergency Brake Signal (EBS), front and rear parking sensors, parking cameras behind, plus an immobilizer and alarm.

However, PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) does not present the Toyota Safety Sense feature like the Corolla Cross which is sold in Thailand. In Thailand, the Corolla Cross has a Toyota Safety Sense feature which includes safety features such as a pre-collision system, lane departure alert with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control with lane tracing assist, and automatic high beams.

Indeed, if the Toyota Safety Sense feature is added to Toyota Corolla Cross sold in Indonesia, the price will certainly be more expensive. To note, the Corolla Cross Hybrid that we tried is priced at IDR 497,800,000 on the road in DKI Jakarta. The matter of cheap or expensive is relative, back to our respective pockets. But for now, Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is one of the cheapest hybrid cars in Indonesia with a price of less than IDR 500 million.
