In the Netherlands, approximately 3,900 patients between the ages of 18 and 39 are diagnosed with cancer each year. It AYA Care Network will hold a HAYAcin campaign on Friday 27 January 2023 to make people aware of this. The foundation sells bunches of hyacinths in the ETZ (Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital).
The flowers are for sale from 09:00 to 16:30 (while stocks last) in the main corridor of ETZ Elisabeth (Hilvarenbeekseweg 60, Tilburg). A bunch of hyacinths costs 5 euros. The proceeds go entirely to better care and scientific research.
“During the corona period, sales were online, but it is very nice that we can be in the main corridor of the hospital again this year and make it a meaningful, warm, but above all, pleasant day,” says Brigitte Vromans of the walk-in area. Oncology.
Young and cancer
Every year in the Netherlands, 3,900 young people between the ages of 18 and 39 are diagnosed with cancer. 20 percent of them die. Young adults with cancer have specific problems and questions, such as education, work, future plans, fertility, emotions and entering into relationships. Therefore, age-specific care and support is necessary. AYA stands for Adolescent & Young Adult; young adults with cancer. Money is needed to provide and develop AYA care, organize training and conduct research.
AYA care in the ETZ
It ETZ is part of it National AYA ‘Young & Cancer’ Care Network. Together with the network, the hospital is working on more awareness and recognition, better information provision, people-oriented care and tailored scientific research for people with cancer in this age group. The AYA Care Network consists of six regional care networks, making AYA care available as close as possible to every AYA. The ETZ belongs to the South/West region and is connected to the AYA knowledge center of the Erasmus MC, where AYAs can turn to with complex problems.
