High school swimmer Hwang Sun-woo (18, Seoul Sports High School) became the first international swimming federation (FINA) accredited world record holder in Korean swimming history, both seniors and juniors.

According to the Korea Swimming Federation on the 27th, FINA delivered the position to the Federation that it was officially recognized as the World Junior Record after reviewing the documentary evidence for Hwang Sun-woo’s men’s freestyle 200m record.

With this, Hwang Sun-woo became the first Korean swimmer to hold the world junior record. He is the first Korean player to hold the highest FINA-certified record, including seniors.

Hwang Sun-woo of the junior division won the championship in the men’s freestyle 200m final held in Gimcheon last November with a record of 1 minute 42 seconds 92.

This is a 0.21 second reduction from the previous world junior record set by Elijah Winnington (Australia) at the 2018 McDonald’s Queensland Championships at the age of 18.

The best record for Korean men’s freestyle 200m, including seniors, was 1 minute 44 seconds 80, set by Park Tae-hwan when he won the gold medal at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

The best record in the men’s freestyle 200m senior category was 1 minute 42 seconds 00 set by Paul Biderman (Germany) at the 2009 World Championships.
