“It will be the best Asian Games ever.”
Hwang Seon-woo (Gangwon Provincial Office), who won the bronze medal in the 200m freestyle at the 2023 Fukuoka World Aquatics Championships, showed strong confidence in the Hangzhou Asian Games to be held in September this year.
Hwang Seon-woo, who returned to Korea through Incheon International Airport with the Korean swimming team on the 31st, said, “Even at the 2019 Gwangju Games, it was not easy for Korean players to advance to the semifinals. However, in this competition, two Korean athletes advanced to the 200m freestyle final, and new Korean records kept coming out,” he said. “I felt that Korean swimming has improved a lot.”
As he said, the Korean management team set new records in 3 individual events and 5 relay events. This means that the overall level of the players has risen, unlike the past when we relied on a small number of star players. This is also the reason why Korean swimming is evaluated as the golden age.
Hwang Seon-woo also acknowledged this evaluation. “There are players who have the best records in many sports. If all the players do their best to get the medals and records they want, (the Hangzhou Games) will be the Asian Games with the best results.”
This tournament also had a great meaning for Hwang Seon-woo. He set a new Korean record (1:44:42) in the 200m freestyle final and won a bronze medal. Hwang Sun-woo, who came second in the same event at the Budapest Games last year with a time of 1:44:47, stood on the podium at the World Swimming Championships twice in a row for the first time in Korean swimming history.
Regarding this, he did not hide his joy, saying, “It feels good to win a valuable medal while breaking the Korean record.” However, he immediately reflected on his shortcomings and pledged his growth. Hwang Seon-woo said, “Honestly, my record was poor in the 100m freestyle. He emphasized that he needs to train more so that he can perform well in the Asian Games.” He failed to qualify for the 100m freestyle final by 0.02 seconds.
He also revealed specific goals for the Asian Games. Hwang Seon-woo said, “I want to reach the podium in both the 100m and 200m freestyle, which are individual events.” “I will repay you with good results in the 800m relay, where people expect a gold medal,” he said.
Hwang Seon-woo will participate in the Hangzhou Asian Games in September this year, the National Sports Festival in October, and the national team selection event in November. Next year, the Doha World Championships in February and the Paris Olympics in July await. Regarding such a murderous schedule, Hwang Seon-woo said, “I think it will be a rough journey, but it is right for the player to fit the schedule. I want to prepare hard and continue to show good records and results.”
Kim Woo-min (Gangwon Provincial Office), who entered the country together that day, also expressed his aspirations, saying, “I will win 4 gold medals at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.” He broke his personal record in the preliminary round (3:44:50) and final (3:43:92) of the 400m freestyle at this event, and rose to fifth place. In the 800m freestyle, he only finished 14th (7:47:69), but it was the fastest time among Asian athletes. He said, “Watching world-class swimmers swim, I discovered my lacking side. He said he intends to make up for it before the Asian Games.”
