Hurricane Otis Downgraded to Tropical Storm After Making Landfall in Acapulco

Hurricane Otis was downgraded to a tropical storm during midday on October 25, reported the National Meteorological Service, after it made landfall in Acapulco, Guerrero, during the early hours of the morning, as a category 5 cyclone.

The SMN report at 12:00 hours indicates that Otis is located 25 kilometers north of Ciudad Altamirano and 205 kilometers north-northwest of Acapulco.

Even as a tropical storm, Otis has maximum sustained winds that reach 95 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts that reach 110 km/h.

Tropical Storm ‘Otis’: Where will it cause rain?

The Service explained that Otis will generate torrential rains of 150 to 250 millimeters in Guerrero, a state that was still recovering from the ravages of Tropical Storm Max.

The forecast for this October 25 includes intense rains (75 to 150 millimeters) for Puebla and eastern Michoacán; very strong (50 to 75 millimeters) for Morelos, the southwest of the State of Mexico and the west of Oaxaca; and strong (25 to 50 millimeters) for Mexico City.

After arriving in Acapulco in the early hours of the day, Otis caused blackouts in Acapulco.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported this Wednesday morning that so far there are no reports of deaths from the hurricane. However, he stressed that there is no communication so the damage report will still be made.

The trajectory of ‘Otis’ minute by minute

The agency estimates that Otis will remain a tropical storm until at least 6:00 p.m. on October 25.

By then, the SMN projection shows that the center of Otis will already be over the eastern region of Michoacán.

Tropical Storm Otis is moving at 17 kilometers per hour heading north-northwest.

The impact of ‘Otis’ in Guerrero

Upon making landfall as a category 5 hurricane, ‘Otis’ caused severe damage to hotels, public buildings, hospitals and homes.

The strong winds caused windows in several hotels to break and furniture to fly, causing terror among tourists staying in hotels.

The hotels have not been the only ones affected, the IMSS ‘Vicente Guerrero’ hospital was also severely damaged.

The National Civil Protection Coordination indicated that there is a yellow alert in Colima (south, north, west and center); Jalisco (southeast); and Michoacán (east, north, northwest, west and center).

As well as a red alert of maximum danger in the northwest, center and southwest of Guerrero.

3 ports closed to navigation by Otis in Oaxaca

In Oaxaca, the Oaxaca Civil Protection Coordination closed three ports to navigation due to rain and high waves due to Hurricane “Otis” that impacted Acapulco.

According to the Civil Protection meteorologist, Cutberto Ruiz, the ports that were closed were: Puerto Escondido, Huatulco and Puerto Ángel, located on the Oaxaca Coast, where squalls and high waves occurred.

He said that in the three ports, fishermen and people heeded the instructions of the port captain and Civil Protection not to approach the sea.

SkyAlert, the early warning platform for earthquakes and other phenomena, reported that its network of seismic sensors is disconnected in the region, due to the destructive effects of the hurricane. As the network is inactive, it would not be possible to report if it trembled in the state, as reported by the brand in a statement.
