News from the NOS

In the US state of Florida, evacuations have been arranged in several places due to an approaching hurricane. The hurricane previously overtook the Bahamas like a tropical storm. There, 860 people had to seek refuge elsewhere.

Wind speeds of 120 kilometers per hour have been measured, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is now talking about a Category 1 hurricane named Nicole. The Florida evacuation order also applies to former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Nicole is currently located approximately 170 kilometers from West Palm Beach. The hurricane is expected to land after midnight (local time) between West Palm Beach and Melbourne, a city north of Miami.

storm surges

Authorities are considering storm surges that could further devastate the state’s coast. The Washington Post writes that the high water level has already caused damage to some buildings in coastal municipalities. Last September, Florida was also hit by Hurricane Ian, one of the strongest storms to ever hit the US mainland.

Nicole is also expected to travel through the states of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and bring lots of rain. A hurricane in November is rare, according to forecasters.
