“Milton is a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale,” the center said in a statement.

Milton could still become a major hurricane when it makes landfall in Florida late Wednesday, weakening to an extratropical storm by Thursday night. Before that, its strength was expected to be so great that meteorologists talked about the need to introduce a sixth category that did not yet exist to classify it.

Forecasters previously warned that Hurricane Milton could cause a devastating storm surge with flooding of up to 3 metres.

It was predicted that it could become one of the most destructive storms on record.

US President Joe Biden has already said that Hurricane Milton is “like the storm of the century.” Before that, the American leader refused to travel abroad because of the natural disaster.
