Hurricane-Like Storm Hits Northern Germany: A21 Motorway Closed & Subways Impacted by Strong Winds – DWD Warning

On Wednesday morning, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned of severe squalls in the north; the risk of a storm surge still exists. A motorway near Hamburg is currently affected, but the elevated subways are also struggling with the storm.

According to the DWD, several storms are currently moving over northern Germany. Hurricane-like gusts must be expected today, especially on the coast. Anyone who is out and about should behave carefully: parts of the roof or branches could fall down.

Tree falls on the A21: motorway completely closed

The A21 was completely closed in the southbound direction from Bad Oldesloe (Stormarn district) on Wednesday morning. According to police information, a tree fell onto the road due to strong winds. Several cars had to avoid the tree and one was damaged. Nobody got hurt.

The southbound lane is completely closed and traffic is being diverted and diverted from Leezen (Segeberg district). The clearance work is continuing.

Subways run at reduced speed

On the U1 section of the elevated railway between Ahrensburg-West and Großhansdorf, trains were no longer able to run on Wednesday morning. The reason for this was also a fallen tree. It took several hours before the route could be reopened. On the remaining above-ground routes of the elevated railway, the subways currently run at a maximum speed of 40 km/h. “There may be delays,” the company writes on “X” (formerly Twitter).

The next failure came at midday: no subways ran between Barmbek and Kellinghusenstrasse because a tree threatened to fall onto the track there too. Buses now run instead of the U3.

Ferry connections between Dagebüll (Nordfriesland district) and the islands of Amrum and Föhr are also affected by the storm. Some trips between the islands and the mainland will be canceled in the morning, as can be seen on the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei (WDR) website. Specifically affected are the connections at 9:30 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. from Amrum to Föhr and Dagebüll, the ferries at 10:50 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. from Föhr to Dagebüll and the connections at 12:00 p.m. and 2:05 p.m. from Dagebüll to Föhr.

Storm deep in the north: These ferries are affected

An additional connection from Amrum to Dagebüll via Föhr is also planned at 2 p.m. For other ferry connections between the mainland and the islands, the departure time is postponed.

The ferry service between Rostock and Gedser (Denmark) was also stopped on Wednesday morning due to a storm. Scandlines recommends travelers on Tuesday to use the crossing option between Puttgarden and Rødby (Denmark).

The ferry departures from Rostock at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. have been canceled. In Gedser the departures are canceled at 11:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Operations are scheduled to resume in Rostock from 6 p.m. and in Gedser from 8:15 p.m. (dpa/mp)
