Hurricane Isaac, Tropical Storm Joyce and other systems that are active in the Atlantic

(CNN Spanish) – Hurricane Isaac is moving in the North Atlantic, and Tropical Storm Joyce, which formed on Friday, is moving over the tropical Atlantic; So far these phenomena are not expected to make landfall.

After the passage of Helene and John, which caused dozens of deaths in the United States and Mexico, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported this Saturday that Isaac remains a category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h. The forecast indicates a gradual weakening and that by Monday it would be classified as a post-tropical cyclone.

The phenomenon is moving at 30 km/h towards the east-northeast without representing a threat to coastal areas. In any case, the report indicates that the storm surge is likely to affect the Azores (a Portuguese archipelago 1,400 kilometers west of the coast of Lisbon) over the next few days, causing waves and rip currents.

In the case of Joyce, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and is moving northwest through the central Atlantic, about 1,800 kilometers east of the Leeward Islands, located in the eastern part of the Caribbean. According to the NHC report“little changes in its strength are expected” for this Saturday, and the weakening would begin at night or on Sunday until degrading to a remnant by Tuesday. There are no warnings for coastal areas.

NHC also follows up to an elongated area of low pressure located a few hundred kilometers west of the Cape Verde Islands, which continues to produce showers and storms.

According to them, “a tropical depression is likely to form” during the early to mid-next week as the system moves west and then northwest.
across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.

Initial forecasts for this year’s hurricane season were aggressive, as all metrics pointed to a turbulent year. But a lull during what is typically the busiest part of the season had experts searching for answers.
