Hurricane Ida impacted Dominican wineries in New York

Dominican merchants established in NY and NJ have been severely affected by the flooding caused by torrential rains from Hurricane Ida across the northeastern US.

The force of the water destroyed merchandise and collapsed ceilings in several warehouses, mostly located in the Bronx, according to Radhamés Rodríguez, president of the United Winemakers Association of America (UBA).

Although they were warned that it was going to rain a lot, the merchants did not think that something of such magnitude would be registered, as did the authorities who did not foresee the devastating impacts of the storm.

“In addition to the floods, many trees on the ground and cars drowned. Even today there are some streets that are closed, ”said Rodríguez, after explaining that there were also losses in businesses in New Jersey.

The rains stopped, however, businesses remain closed because they are working to repair the damage caused. “It was much stronger than we really expected,” said the UBA president.

Precarious conditions in the structures

For his part, Dominican congressman Adriano Espaillat informed Diario Libre that all transport services are already working at 100%, and highlighted that, after declaring the state of emergency, the remnants of Hurricane Ida represented the highest level of rainfall. throughout the city.

“The passage of Hurricane Ida is a reflection of the poor condition of structures in New York City, which is why President Biden’s infrastructure project is needed now more than ever,” said Espaillat.
