Hurricane Ida also disrupts US Open tennis program in New York

The aftermath of Hurricane Ida has also caused problems at the US Open in New York. The organization had to interrupt and postpone a large number of matches on Wednesday due to the extreme weather. Tennis could only be played on the indoor courts, although the roof of the Louis Armstrong stadium could not handle the heavy rainfall.

The match between Diego Schwartzman and Kevin Anderson had to be interrupted twice, because the strong wind caused the rain to end up on the track through the open corners of the stadium. Schwartzman and Anderson finished their match after midnight at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the main track on Flushing Meadows that can be completely closed off. The Argentinian Schwartzman won in three sets: 7-6(4) 6-3 6-4.

Before the storm broke out, Botic van de Zandschulp caused a surprise on day 3 of the US Open by beating eighth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud in four sets. The Dutch qualifier thus reached the third round.

Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency in New York on Wednesday. Visitors to the US Open also received an emergency alarm on their phones, with the call not to go out on the street because of a “dangerous and life-threatening situation”. Metro stations were flooded because of the torrential rain. Hurricane Ida previously caused enormous damage in the US state of Louisiana.
