More than two dozen crews were reported missing after their ship broke in two when hit by a storm in the water Hong Kong. This incident happened when tropical storm Chaba is hitting the waters South China Sea.
As reported Reuters and AFPSaturday (2/7/2022), ship type engineering vessel it was reportedly carrying 30 people on board when the storm hit on Saturday (2/7) morning local time.
The Hong Kong Government Flying Service said the ship was in waters 160 nautical miles southwest of Hong Kong when it “severely damaged and broke into two pieces”. As many as 30 crew members were reportedly forced to leave the ship.
Three of the crew were rescued at 15:00 local time and immediately taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Search and rescue operations are still ongoing for the approximately 27 other crew members who are still missing. The bad weather that enveloped the scene made it even more difficult to find the missing victims.
Dramatic footage released by Hong Kong authorities showed one victim being carried aboard a helicopter with huge waves crashing against the half-submerged deck of the ship below.
The three survivors said, as quoted by a Hong Kong government statement, that the rest of the crew may have been swept away by the waves before the rescue helicopter arrived at the scene.
