Hurricane Helene hits the United States killing 33 people

Hurricane Helene hit United States. 33 people were reported to have died as a result of the accident.

Reported AFP and Reuters, Saturday (28/9/2024), US officials reported on Friday local time that 33 people died after Hurricane Helene hit Florida and several other southeastern states.

The storm also left a trail of damage, with several areas still under flood warnings.

US authorities said Florida had reported seven deaths, nearby Georgia had recorded 11 deaths, and South Carolina had 14 deaths including two firefighters. Meanwhile North Carolina has reported one death.

Tropical storm Helene caused flooding with up to 4 million homes and businesses experiencing power outages.

More than 50 people were reported trapped on the roof of a hospital as of midday Friday in Unicoi County, Tennessee – about 120 miles northeast of Knoxville – as floodwaters inundated the rural community.
