Grace crossed Veracruz with wind speeds of around 150 kilometers per hour and with peaks of up to 200 kilometers per hour. On Friday, the tornado swept across Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before moving further west. The storm caused heavy rains and flooding. Grace previously brought storms to earthquake-stricken Haiti and Jamaica.
Parts of the US northeast coast are bracing for Cyclone Henri, expected Sunday. More than 42 million inhabitants have to take problems into account. Authorities warn of life-threatening storm surges and floods. The mayor of New York City is calling on residents to stay indoors or use public transportation only.
State of emergency
Henri reaches shore at Long Island or nearby, calculations show. New York State declared a state of emergency as a precaution. It makes assistance easier. The National Guard has also been mobilized so that reservists are ready. The neighboring states of Massachusetts and Connecticut did as well.
