Hurricane Daniel Devastates Libya: Over 2,800 People Killed and Thousands Missing

More than 2,800 people were killed and thousands were missing as a result of Storm Daniel, which struck northeastern Libya yesterday, Monday, before heading towards Egyptian territory.

The head of the Libyan government appointed by Parliament, Osama Hammad, said that entire neighborhoods in the city of Derna, containing thousands of citizens, disappeared into the sea, noting that the government declared the city a disaster zone and imposed a curfew and a state of emergency in eastern Libya for two days. Because of the hurricane and floods sweeping the region.

Reports indicated that the heavy rains accompanying Storm Daniel left hundreds dead as a result of the floods, while dozens are still missing and hundreds of others were displaced.

The sudden floods flooded entire areas, until Derna became a disaster area. It is a city with a population of about 200,000 people and is located on a valley that bears its name.

Heavy rainwater and floods swept away the residents of the cities of Al-Bayda, Sousse, Al-Marj, Tobruk, and all the cities and villages of Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar and the eastern coast, all the way to Benghazi.

The amount of rainfall recorded reached 400 mm in the areas of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, an amount not recorded in the region for more than 4 decades.

Following the natural disaster, the National Unity Government took, during an emergency meeting, a number of measures, including declaring three days of mourning and lowering flags at half-mast. It called for the need to ignore political differences and directed the transfer of funds to all municipalities affected by the floods in the east of the country.

This was preceded by declaring a state of alert, imposing a curfew, and closing the main oil ports in the country.

It is noteworthy that Storm Daniel started in Greece and Turkey before heading towards Libya, where it left about 30 people dead.

Storm Daniel is heading towards Egyptian territory, where its impact is expected to be limited after it lost its strength after making landfall in Libya.

Qais Al-Fakhri, head of the Red Crescent in Benghazi, said in statements earlier today, Monday, “We recorded at least 150 deaths after the buildings collapsed. We expect the death toll to rise to 250.”

For its part, the United Nations Mission in Libya said that it is closely following developments in the storm and will provide “urgent relief aid to support response efforts at the local and national levels.”

The US State Department said in a statement that it is coordinating with the United Nations and the Libyan authorities to provide aid to those affected by the hurricane.
