hunting prohibited for two years in a burnt massif to repopulate its fauna

Fires devastated many hectares in France this summer. Le Bouches-du-Rhône was no exception. In mid-July, a fire started in the passage of a freight train, whose brake on a wagon was defective, had covered 1,600 hectares, destroying much of this small limestone massif located between Tarascon and Avignon. Up to 1,000 firefighters were then mobilized.

From now on, the massif must recover from the fire. A decision to this effect was taken on Monday by the prefecture, with an ordinance prohibiting “any hunting” in the area. “Given the extent of the fire (…) and its impact on fauna, it is necessary to take emergency measures to protect the environment of the burnt environments to favor the repopulation of wildlife species”, indicates the press release of the prefecture.

Wild boar hunting may, however, be subject to an exemption request, exceptionally and if necessary, in order to prevent damage to property or people.

This decision complements a previous decree of 30 September which has already prohibited the access and movement of people and the parking of vehicles in the burnt area up to and including 31 May 2023.
