Hunting man: no hypothesis is excluded by the police

Looking for a fugitive or a body? The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) does not exclude any hypothesis in its research to find Martin Carpentier, the father of the two young girls found dead in Saint-Apollinaire.

Although several citizens claim to have seen the 44-year-old man wanted since Wednesday evening, the police confirm that they did not see him.

All scenarios are therefore still being studied by the SQ, which continues to comb a wooded area of Saint-Apollinaire. The police force must combine both the search techniques for a body and those for a person on the run.

Ground searches

According to what Roger Ferland, a former investigator from the Service de police de la Ville de Québec (SPVQ), observed, the police concentrated their research on the ground.

“The police were at a short distance from each other, three meters or one meter, depending on how dense it is or not, so as to make sure that on the ground, there is nothing next to them”, he explains.

“We really have to cover the territory because if it is lifeless, we will have no sign at all and it is not by the air that we are going to have it, the woodland is really too strong”, adds the ex-investigator.

The density of the forest also complicates the police’s research work.

“We see that the ground is covered with ferns, young branches, young shoots everywhere. It’s very dense. If someone was lying on the ground, you wouldn’t see them, ”says Ferland.

In order to make sure to comb the area and not miss any clues, the police do what they call static searches.

“When we do, we try to be extremely systematic, we stay at a distance, the police, one from the other, so as to see each other, with GPS as well,” explains the ex-investigator.

Several chalets in the area

Sunday morning, police in all terrain vehicles (ATVs) began their day of research on a path leading to several chalets.

Some chalet owners in the area were also delighted to see the agents.

“I prefer that they are there for me to see, than to go there alone.” I was a little fearful, ”says Denis Lévesque, one of the owners.

One of the problems in this sector is that there are several chalets there and the majority of them are only inhabited for a few weeks in the year or only on weekends.

This is an additional problem for the police which may prove to be an advantage for the fugitive since he could easily find refuge and food there.

Martin Carpentier has been on the run since Wednesday evening after his car was involved in an accident on Highway 20 near Saint-Apollinaire.

An Amber alert was triggered Thursday afternoon since the man’s two daughters, Norah and Romy Carpentier, were also missing.

The bodies of the two girls were found in a wooded area of Saint-Apollinaire on Saturday morning.

Research has continued since to find it.

The Sûreté du Québec invites people who have information about Martin Carpentier to call 911.
