The statement was made by the Minister of Health for the state of New South Wales (NSW), Brad Hazzard, as reported by AFP on Monday (5/7/2021). Insufficient supply of vaccines has triggered panic among residents.
“It’s almost like the Hunger Games now with people chasing vaccines,” Hazzard said, referring to desperate Australians desperate to go to mass vaccination centers or regularly contact medical facilities in hopes of getting vaccination schedules.
The highly popular film and book The Hunger Games tells the story of a group of young people who are chosen each year for a televised battle of life and death set against a dystopian future.
Only seven per cent of Australia’s 25 million population are currently fully vaccinated — getting two doses of the vaccine. The figure is recorded as one of the lowest proportions for the developed country category.
Australian authorities rely heavily on Corona vaccine made by AstraZeneca, and developed a domestic vaccine that failed in clinical trials.
Many Citizens Reject AstraZeneca
It is known that many Australians refuse the available AstraZeneca vaccine. They seek to secure vaccination schedules by Corona vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech. The AstraZeneca vaccine is now only recommended for people aged 60 years and over.
But the possibility of obtaining a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has become difficult as the Australian government’s efforts to secure more doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and other brand name vaccines have been hampered by late decision-making on vaccine orders and limited global supply of vaccines.
