Hunters must submit a sample of a wild boar shot to the Agro Plovdiv laboratory – 2024-10-05 12:07:09

The aim is to take timely measures against ASF and trichinellosis

In connection with the opening of the group season hunting on wild boar today, 05.10.2024, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) reminds that it is mandatory to hand over samples for research on the diseases African swine fever (ASF) and trichinellosis.

The ASF virus does not affect people’s health, but the study is necessary for the purpose of monitoring for new outbreaks of the disease, as well as for the purposes of analysis and identification of measures to combat it.

The agency reminds that testing for trichinellosis is extremely important to minimize the risk of human infection when consuming meat obtained from wild boars. The research is carried out in accredited laboratories, including in the laboratories of the BABH.

Upon finding a positive result for trichinellosis, the laboratory immediately informs the director of the Regional Directorate for Food Safety (ODBH), the official veterinarian of the municipality where the wild boar was shot and the contact person from the hunting team, to take the necessary measures to dispose of the meat . The positive sample is sent to the National Reference Laboratory for the diagnosis of trichinellosis at the National Diagnostic Research Veterinary Medical Institute. The meat from the positive wild boar is tracked, collected and sent for disposal.
