In Berlin, the last climate activists have also ended the hunger strike that started four weeks ago near the Reichstag building. There were two more. They have stopped their strike because they have been promised by chancellor candidate Scholz (SPD) that he will enter into a debate with them.
At the end of last month, a small group of young activists started the hunger strike. In the run-up to the Bundestag elections, which will be held next day, they wanted to draw attention to the climate. In their view, the parties are far from ambitious enough in this area.
Most hunger strikers stopped their action earlier this week. They did so when the three most prominent Chancellor’s candidates did not comply with their demand to debate with them live on television before the elections.
Two activists continued and intensified their action last afternoon, by also stopping drinking. But in the evening one of them announced on Twitter that their action was over. “After 27 days of hunger strike and 7 hours without water – with my last strength – I am now ending the hunger strike.”
