Hungary’s position regarding Ukraine’s accession to the European Union

Previously, Hungary threatened to block all negotiations related to Ukraine’s accession to the EU. Against this background, President Vladimir Zelensky, during a visit to Argentina, was able to communicate with Orban on the eve of the EU summit. According to him, the conversation was frank and concerned the European affairs of the two states.

During the summit, the European Council nevertheless decided to open negotiations on Ukraine’s accession.

50 billion euros for Ukraine

Previously, the European Commission proposed to provide financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros until 2027. On December 14, EU leaders discussed this initiative at a summit in Brussels, however, on December 15, Hungary vetoed the decision, despite the support of the other 26 members of the bloc.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he would not approve such a decision until the bloc pays all the funds intended for his country that were frozen.
