Szijjártó did not confirm that Scholz took the Hungarian Prime Minister out during the vote for the start of EU negotiations with Ukraine. The minister said Politico, which reported on the case, was “frivolous.”
“I recommend that in places as serious as this podcast, frivolous tabloids like Politico should not even be mentioned,” he said.
Also, the Hungarian Foreign Minister believes that the decision to start negotiations with Ukraine has no “practical significance.”
“This is a decision of principle that has no practical significance. And when a country in the European Union uses a strong veto tool, it must be chosen carefully,” Szijjarto added.
Hungary’s position regarding Ukraine’s accession to the EU
Let us recall that on December 14, the leaders of the European Union countries during the summit approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the bloc. This happened despite Hungary threatening to veto the initiative.
As Western media reported, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban left the hall when the issue of opening introductory negotiations with Ukraine was discussed at the summit. Later it turned out that such a solution at the head of the Hungarian government was allegedly proposed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
