Hungary’s Legislative Program Excludes Sweden’s NATO Accession: Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen

The Hungarian government’s legislative program did not include Sweden’s accession to NATO, ATV TV channel reports, citing Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen.

According to him, the government program for the spring parliamentary session of 2024 includes 18 bills and amendments. Sweden’s accession to NATO was not included in the list of documents. Parliament will vote on issues related to water services in the country and the adoption of the state budget for 2025.

The ambassadors of Sweden and Finland have submitted applications to join NATO in May 2022. In November of the same year, the Prime Minister of Hungary Victor Orban stated that the country would support the entry of states into the alliance. On April 4, 2023, Finland joined NATO.

To date, Turkey and Hungary remain the only NATO members that have not ratified Sweden’s application. Budapest justified its position by citing the fact that Stockholm constantly undermines bilateral relations and puts itself in a position of “moral superiority.”

According to the Hungarian government, Sweden has repeatedly sought to strike Hungary – for example in 2021, when the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called on the EU to put pressure on Hungary and support the “increasingly strong” Hungarian opposition. Also, according to an adviser to the Hungarian government Zoltan KovačSwedish Minister for EU Affairs Jessica Rosewall proposed to stop transferring EU aid to Hungary.
