Hungary’s Kristof Milak takes gold in the 100m butterfly

Paris. Hungary’s Kristof Milak claimed his second Olympic gold medal on Saturday by winning a thrilling men’s 100-metre butterfly final, adding to the silver medal he won in the 200 metres at the Paris 2024 Games.

Three years after taking gold in the 200m at Tokyo 2020, the 24-year-old secured victory by touching the wall in 49.90 seconds, 0.09 ahead of Canada’s Josh Liendo (silver), while fellow Maple Leaf member Ilya Kharun took bronze.

Milak, who already has four Olympic medals, gave Hungary its second gold in Paris, following Hubert Kos’ title in the 200m backstroke.

Milak had to fight back from fourth place and managed to draw level with Liendo in the final metres, before overtaking him by the tip of a finger.

The Hungarian swimmer had twice come close to winning gold against rivals at the peak of their careers: at Tokyo 2020, American Caeleb Dressel beat him to a world record in the 100 metres, and at Paris 2024, the unstoppable Leon Marchand beat him in the 200 metres.

Fortunately for the Hungarian, neither of them competed in his 100-meter butterfly final on Saturday.

The gold medal is a just reward for Milak’s perseverance, who comes a year after he withdrew from the Fukuoka World Championships, citing a mental and physical weakness.
