Hungary’s Delay in Ratifying Sweden’s NATO Accession Causes Tension with Swedish Prime Minister

Orbán’s party “Fidesz” told broadcaster ATV about this condition on Friday.

The ruling coalition also includes the Hungarian Christian Democratic People’s Party (KNDP).

Hungary is the only NATO member that has not yet ratified Sweden’s accession to NATO.

Budapest is delaying ratification because, as the government explains, it is offended by Sweden’s criticism of the rule of law situation in Hungary.

Kristerson met Orbán briefly in Brussels on Thursday during a special EU summit.

The Swedish Prime Minister told his country’s journalists at a press conference that he had “a good conversation with Viktor Orbán”.

He did not say more specifically when deeper talks with Hungarian representatives could take place.

The Swedish Prime Minister has previously made it clear that he would not like to go to Budapest until Hungary has ratified the agreement and Sweden does not have the ratifications of all NATO members.
