Hungary refuses to host the 2024 European Figure Skating Championships reported on the website of the Hungarian National Skating Association (MOKSZ). The decision is explained by the economic problems that have arisen in the country due to hostilities in neighboring Ukraine.
“Due to the protracted conflict in our country’s neighborhood, its impact on the economy and energy prices, which also affects figure skating, MOKSZ, after much deliberation, is withdrawing from hosting the European Championships,” MOKSZ said in a statement.
The organization notified the International Skating Union (ISU) that it would not be able to host the tournament “due to a lack of sufficient financial resources to organize quality competitions.”
The tournament was to be held from 22 to 28 January 2024 in Budapest.
In 2023, the European Championship was held in the Finnish city of Espoo.
Russian skaters are currently unable to take part in international competitions due to suspension by the ISU.
