BUDAPEST – Parliament Hungary has passed a resolution demanding the government of Prime Minister (PM) Viktor Orban pursue the country’s “vision” for the future European Union .

Documents filed by several MPs, including Victor Orban’s Fidesz Party, call for disbandment European Parliament in its current form, as well as veto power for member states on any EU law.

“The European Union must change because it is not ready to face today’s challenges,” said the resolution published on the parliament’s website Russia TodayWednesday (20/7/2022).

The resolution particularly criticizes the “unconsidered” sanctions that the European Union has imposed on Russia for its military actions in Ukraine, adding that their economic fallout has affected Hungarians. The document was supported by 130 MPs, while 50 voted against it.

According to the resolution, only strong and capable member states are able to protect their citizens.

“The bloc’s task should thus lie in supporting its member states in effective crisis management,” the document said, adding that the current framework of EU treaties was not suitable as a basis for cooperation in a crisis era.

The legislators then demanded that the EU Treaty be legally reviewed to ensure the political and ideological neutrality of the EU Commission and reorganize the European Parliament so that its members would be elected by the legislatures of member states rather than through direct elections.

“The national parliament should also have the right to veto unwanted EU legislation and the national government and lawmakers should be able to propose new bills at the EU level,” the document said.

Other suggestions include creating a common European army to ensure the continent is able to defend itself, as well as protecting indigenous European minorities and recognizing European Christian and cultural roots as the basis of European integration.
