Bloomberg newspaper revealed that Hungary blocked a joint request by European Union member states to issue an international warrant regarding the “arrest” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to the newspaper: “The Budapest veto means that the chief diplomat of the European Union, Josep Borrell, issued instead of the joint statement, a statement in his name, regarding the decision of the International Criminal Court.”
Bloomberg said that the EU justice ministers issued, on Monday, a statement supporting the decision of the International Criminal Court, but Hungary refused to sign it, and indicated that Budapest would take a position on this issue when EU leaders meet at the next summit in Brussels.
On March 17, the Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court, whose jurisdiction is not recognized by Russia, issued an “arrest” warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ombudsman for Children Maria Lvova Belova.
The head of the Constitutional Committee of the Russian Federation Council, Andrei Klishas, said that this has no legal grounds or consequences, and after this absurd decision, this body embarked on the path of self-liquidation.
The press secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, also said that raising the issue of the International Criminal Court regarding the “arrest” of the president is unacceptable, and Moscow does not recognize its jurisdiction, and any of its decisions are null and void from the point of view of law.
