Budapest, Jan 24 (EFE).- Hungary will donate some 304,000 doses of BioNtech/Pfizer vaccines against the coronavirus to Nicaragua, in order to speed up the vaccination campaign in the Central American country, the ultranationalist government of the Central European country reported on Tuesday.

“We have decided to donate more than 304,000 doses to Nicaragua so that they too can overcome the pandemic,” Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in a video on the Facebook social network.

According to the minister, in many countries of the world the pandemic continues to be a major challenge and Nicaragua is also one of the poorest Latin American countries.

Szijjártó acknowledged that these are drugs that, due to the vaccination rate in Hungary and their expiration date, will surely not be used in his country.

“Nobody wants to destroy medicines that can be used in other parts of the world,” added the minister.

The vaccines will arrive this Wednesday in Nicaragua, says the official Hungarian news agency MTI.

Currently, more than 66% of the Hungarian population is immunized with some anti-covid vaccine and for months there have been no measures in force against the spread of the virus, since the number of new infections remains at low levels. EFE
