“Hungary Blocks 500 Million Euros from European Peace Mechanism for Ukraine”

Hungary did not approve the payment of the next tranche of military aid support to Ukraine provided under the European Peace Support Mechanism. This was reported by Reuters on Tuesday, citing a statement from the office of a government spokesman.

“Hungary disagrees with the fact that the European Union, together with other existing instruments, uses the European Peace Support Mechanism only in relation to Ukraine, as this does not allow the channeling of sufficient funds to promote EU interests in other areas,” it said in response to Reuters’ request for comment after the Italian media report on the matter.

It says that other areas where the funds could be used include the Balkans or North Africa.

The tension continues

“It is crucial for the Hungarian government that these issues are clarified and therefore it has not approved the payment of the next tranche of the EPF,” the spokesperson’s office added.

We remind you that the tranche in the amount of EUR 500 million was to be released next Monday.

The European Instrument for Peace was established in 2021 and is financed by contributions from EU member states.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban pointed out that Western countries give Ukraine broad support and “they decide for themselves how far they are willing to go and how much they are willing to spend” on arming the Ukrainian army.
