Hungary has again blocked the granting of 500 million euros to Ukraine within the framework of the European mechanism to support peace, diplomatic sources in Brussels told BNR.
The information became known after the meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU member states in Luxembourg. The European Peace Fund was established in 2021 and is financed by the contributions of EU member states.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell only mentioned that foreign ministers had failed to agree on the eighth tranche, but gave no details.
Budapest had warned Kiev that it would block this aid until Ukraine removed the Hungarian bank OTP from its list of legal entities supporting Russian aggression. Ukraine did it in September. However, the Hungarians set new conditions and today Budapest’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó was adamant.
Until now, Ukraine has received a total of 3.6 billion euros under the mentioned mechanism. These are 7 tranches of 500 million each, with each of them adding something on top. The idea of the foreign ministers is to create a fund for the defense of Ukraine, from which the country will receive 5 billion annually.
