Hungary and Slovenia want to organize the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championships

Slovenia and Hungary have announced a joint candidacy to host the Hockey World Championships in 2023.

Over the weekend, both teams secured promotion to the elite at the A-Group I Division of the World Championships in Ljubljana and they want to replace Russia as the host of the World Championship. At the end of April, the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) withdrew the organization of World Cup 2023 for a military invasion of Ukraine.

The venue of next year’s tournament will be decided by the IIHF Congress in Tampere during the last week of this year’s World Championships (May 13-29). The World Championship was originally scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg from May 5 to 21, 2023, and Slovenia and Hungary want to organize the championship on the same date.

“Last month, the IIHF decided that St. Petersburg would not be the venue of the elite category next year, so we came up with the idea of ​​organizing the championship quickly with our Hungarian friends.” quoted the head of the Slovenian Hockey Association Matjaž Rakovec STA agency.

According to the candidacy, one basic group, two quarter-final duels, both semi-finals and finals, would be played in the new MVM Dome hall in Budapest with a capacity of 19,182 spectators. One basic group and two quarterfinals would host the Stožice Arena in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana for 10,500 spectators. Hungary and Slovenia have a budget of around 20 million euros.

“It is an extraordinary opportunity and a chance to show competent that even small countries can be given the opportunity to organize a championship. We are geographically and organizationally close and many other countries from the elite group are close to us, ” claims the head of Hungarian hockey György Such.

Slovenia and Hungary announced a joint candidacy under the motto: “Extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary decisions.” Hungary has never hosted an elite World Cup tournament in history, Ljubljana was the venue of the World Cup in 1966.
