Géza Csapó, the legendary figure of kayaking, the six-time Olympic world champion, has died at the age of 72. Csapo was called the king of kayaking in the 1970s for a reason: in 1972 he won bronze in Monaco and in 1976, in Montreal, he won silver in the 1000 meters K-1 at the five ring games. At the World Championships he managed to get on the top step of the podium six times: in 1971 in Belgrade as a 4 × 500 m relay, in 1973 in Tampere in three tests (one 500 meters, one 1000 meters, two 10,000 meters), in 1974 in Città of Mexico in a 1000 meters, and a year later in Belgrade in 500 individual meters.
After the end of his career, he worked in Szeged first as a methodological group leader and then as head coach – reads the Facebook post reporting the news of his death on the page of the Hungarian Kayak-Canoe Association.
