[ブダペスト 1日 ロイター] – The Hungarian parliament has started deliberations on the ratification of Finland and Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on the 1st.

Two Nordic countries applied for membership last year, but all 30 countries need to ratify. But it opposes Sweden’s membership, saying Turkey harbors people it sees as members of terrorist groups.

In Hungary, which has been slow to ratify, Prime Minister Orban last week first expressed concern over the two countries’ accession. He accused both countries of spreading “outright lies” about Hungary’s democracy and rule of law.

Fides lawmakers said they would continue to hold talks with the two countries, but issued a statement that the ruling party “supports Finland and Sweden joining NATO.”

During a general debate on the bill earlier today, President Novak and a senior foreign ministry official urged Congress to ratify the two countries’ NATO membership “as soon as possible.” A final vote is expected later this month.
