“Looking at the numbers, looking at those around, looking at the fact that NATO is not ready to send troops, it is clear that there is no victory on the battlefield for poor Ukrainians,” he said.
Orban believes that the war can be stopped only when Russia concludes an agreement with the United States. The prime minister hopes that the next US president will be Donald Trump, who said that he was allegedly able to “end the war in 24 hours” and said that he would allow the Russian Federation to take part of the territories of Ukraine in order to avoid war.
The Hungarian prime minister also said that allegedly it does not matter who invaded whom, because the question is what will happen the next morning.
“The next morning, and this is a fact, more and more people will die. There is no chance for either side to win. This is a war that takes many people’s lives without giving a result,” he said.
Orban said that the parties needed to be convinced of the need to reach the only possible solution, which, in his opinion, is a ceasefire. And after that, peace negotiations should begin.
The reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine
Foreign Ministry Speaker Oleg Nikolenko after such statements by Orban declaredthat the Kremlin should rejoice, because the Hungarian Prime Minister removed Russia’s responsibility for its aggression against Ukraine.
“The same European politicians argued last year that Ukraine has no chance to hold out for more than 72 hours. They were wrong then, they are wrong now,” he wrote.
So, Nikolenko stressed that, unlike supporters of capitulation to the enemy without resistance, Ukrainians will continue to fight until the territories are completely liberated from the invaders. After all, this is the only way not only to restore peace in Ukraine, but also to ensure the security of all of Europe.
With this in mind, it is critical to join forces to ensure that Ukraine has everything it needs to hasten Russia’s defeat.
Hungary position on Russia’s war against Ukraine
Hungary is called the closest EU country to the Kremlin. Thus, it blocks sanctions against Russian oligarchs and companies, prevents the allocation of funds for Ukraine.
Thus, the EU foreign ministers failed to approve the allocation of the eighth tranche for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine, since Hungary threatened to veto the transfer of funds.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto noted that Budapest is blocking funds from the EU, because he wants Ukraine to lift sanctions from the Hungarian OTP Bank, previously included in the list of international sponsors of the war, because it continues to work in Russia.
In addition, Hungary is one of the few NATO members that refused to supply weapons to help Ukraine repel a Russian invasion.
