The Hungarian parliament will vote on Sweden’s accession to NATO on Monday, a high-ranking official of the ruling Fidesz party announced.
The head of the “Fidesz” parliamentary faction, Mate Kočiš, announced on the social network “Facebook” on Tuesday that he has asked the speaker that “the final vote on the accession protocol of the Kingdom of Sweden, which our parliamentary group intends to support, will be included in the agenda of the session of February 26, 2024.” .
In order for a country to join NATO, it needs the support of all existing members of the alliance. More than a year and a half after Sweden’s application to join the alliance, Hungary is the only one of the 31 NATO member states that has not ratified Sweden’s admission to the alliance. Budapest is delaying ratification because, as the government explains, it is offended by Sweden’s criticism of the rule of law situation in Hungary.
