With the votes of the government majority, the Hungarian parliament passed a new teacher employment law. 134 MPs voted in favor of the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday, 60 against, as the parliament announced on its website. Months of protests by teachers, students and parents against the increasing deterioration of conditions in Hungarian schools preceded the draft law.
With the new law, teachers in the EU country lose their status as public servants. The law imposes more workloads on them and robs them of the freedom to organize their lessons. Instructional content and textbooks have already been largely specified by the state Kleberlsberg office, which is responsible for all public schools.
The adoption of the new law is likely to further embitter many teachers. Several thousand of them had announced that they would give up teaching after the law came into force. Schools are already complaining about a teacher shortage. Reasons are low salaries, but also paternalism and patronage by the Klebersberg office.
Right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban wants to fundamentally transform his country. According to his ideas, the school system should convey traditional, Christian and patriotic values.
