In 2014, Shujoks, little known to the general public, became a judge of the Constitutional Court, and two years later – its chairman.

The position of the Hungarian president is basically ceremonial.

On February 10, the current president Novak announced her resignation in connection with the scandal caused by her decision to pardon a criminal convicted of child sexual abuse.

Novak was in the position of president since 2022.

“I signed the pardon, which caused confusion and alarm for many people,” Novak said in announcing her resignation, admitting she had made a mistake.

In 2023, Novaka pardoned the former deputy director of the state orphanage. In 2022, this man was sentenced to more than three years in prison for helping to hide the sexual crimes against children committed by the director of the orphanage.

The director of the orphanage was sentenced to eight years in prison for exploiting at least ten children between 2004 and 2016.

The former deputy director of the children’s home in Novák was pardoned together with about 20 other prisoners in connection with the visit of Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church to Hungary in April 2023. Novak initially denied any wrongdoing and declined calls for an official explanation for his decision.
