This week the Formula 1 circus will travel from Austria to Hungary, where the Hungarian GP weekend is planned near Budapest. However, new rules introduced by the government are making life a lot more difficult for all Britons involved in Formula 1.
Personnel from Great Britain and employees living outside the EU have to go into a strict lockdown in Hungary, because the Hungarian government wants to curb the spread of the corona virus. The images of British people who are waiting to open British pubs have not fallen well with the Hungarians.
British (and non-European) staff should therefore not be allowed to leave their hotels in the coming days unless it is traveling to and from the circuit or from Hungary. They are also not allowed to use taxis and public transport. Even simple stops for fuel or a toilet visit along the highway would be enough to get you in trouble.
If they break the rules in this way, the Hungarian authorities can issue fines of up to 15,000. Even prison sentences are not excluded by the government of Hungary.
The Formula 1 organization has therefore urged all teams and their staff to abide by the rules. Personnel outside these rules are also advised to adhere to them, in order to demonstrate the benevolence of Formula 1 and to avoid misunderstandings.
The vast majority of the Formula 1 circus is British, as seven out of ten teams come from there. There are also four British drivers. Lewis Hamilton, Alexander Albon, Lando Norris and George Russell.
