Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó repeated that official Budapest will not support the appointment of the head of the Dutch government to the post of NATO Secretary General.
He said this during a press conference, reports “European Truth” with reference to Agerpres.
At the same time, Szijjártó hinted at possible support for the candidacy of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, saying that “it’s good to finally have a candidate from Central Europe.”
“We are certainly not going to support the candidacy of Mark Rutte. We will not support him! How can we support a person who previously stated that Hungary must be brought to its knees,” said the Hungarian minister.
“At the same time, we are glad that we finally have a candidate from Central Europe. NATO has never had a candidate from Central Europe before, now we have a candidate, and this is good news. What will come of this, what the result will be, we have not yet we know,” he added.
Currently, the most likely candidate is Mark Rutte, who is finishing his work as Prime Minister of the Netherlands. However, even with his election difficulties may arise due to the position of Hungary and Turkey, as well as the political influence of Donald Trump, who has a real chance of winning the US presidential election.
In addition, Rutte challenged Romanian President Klaus Iohanniswho also wants to compete for the post of Secretary General.
Against this background, Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins believes that the North Atlantic Alliance Rutte should not be prescribed to the post of Secretary General without first having a “broad discussion” about NATO’s future challenges.
