Hungarian Deputies Boycott Meeting on Sweden’s NATO Accession, Delaying Ratification

Deputies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban boycotted a parliamentary meeting on Sweden’s accession to NATO, which will further slow down the country’s accession to the Alliance.

Details: Members of Orban’s Fidesz party did not attend a meeting on Monday that the Hungarian opposition called to ratify Sweden’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The next opportunity for ratification will be on February 26, when the Hungarian parliament returns from its winter break.

Hungary is the only NATO country that has not ratified Stockholm’s application.

Prime Minister Orban says his government supports Sweden’s entry, but legislation has been stuck in parliament since mid-2022.

Lawmakers in Hungary’s ruling party, who are tightly controlled by Orban, have vowed to delay ratification until after the Swedish prime minister’s visit to Budapest, which they see as necessary to make amends for Stockholm’s alleged criticism of Hungary’s democratic backsliding.

“If this is an important issue for the Swedes, then obviously the Swedish prime minister will come to Budapest,” Fidesz said.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said last week that he would prefer to come to Hungary only after parliament in Budapest decides to ratify Swedish membership.
