At the previous meeting, the English players were racially attacked by the Hungarian football supporters.
The Hungarians therefore have to play two home games without supporters, although children under 14 were allowed tonight.
But when the English knelt in the Puskas Arena before the kick-off of the Nations League game tonight, there was booing from more than 30,000 people in the stadium.
“Given the sanction it is difficult to understand that the stadium was half full,” England coach Gareth Southgate confessed to British media after the game.
“Initially, when we arrived at the stadium, the atmosphere was very good. The children waved to us when we came out to warm up. When our players knelt, the mood changed completely.”
“I think that has to do with upbringing. Children and young people are under the influence of adults and learn certain behaviors from it. I have no idea why some people don’t appreciate that gesture and young people often don’t know what they are doing, because they were influenced by adults.”
“We are just doing this in an effort to educate. Everyone knows what we believe in and what we stand for. We will continue to do so.”
