Dressed in black, holding fake babies swaddled, hundreds of demonstrators took part in a symbolic funeral procession on Thursday in the emblematic avenues of New York, to demand a cease-fire and an end to the devastating Israeli bombings in Gaza.
To the sound of drums, the procession silently followed a “Ceasefire now” banner to Times Square, one of the beating hearts of Manhattan, an area known for its giant advertising screens and very popular with tourists. Demonstrators also held photos depicting Palestinian children who died in Gaza.
“We want to draw attention to the fact that to date, almost 10,000 children, counting children alone, have been killed in Gaza as a result of this horrific bombing and assault, which continues tirelessly,” testified Grace Lile, a 64-year-old archivist.
Since the start of Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip, following the bloody attack launched on October 7 by Hamas, New York has lived to the rhythm of actions in support of the Palestinians or Israel.
These demonstrations notably surrounded the Jewish celebrations of Hanukkah and Catholic Christmas in the multicultural megacity of 8.5 million inhabitants.
American President Joe Biden, criticized by the most left-wing supporters of the Democratic Party for his unfailing support for Israel, also warned his ally against an erosion of international support, because of the “indiscriminate” bombings in Gaza.
