The pilot whales are spread over a large area. Many animals are in shallow water and relatively inaccessible locations. Some are also probably too big to move (pilot whales can grow up to 7 meters in length and weigh up to 3,000 kg). “We are going to have to select,” says biologist Kris Carlyson. “We will try to be the first to save the animals with the best chances.”
To this end, the rescue workers will initially look at animals closest to deep water. They have so far managed to guide 25 animals into open water. The rescue will take several days. Carlyson knows from previous missions that stranded pilot whales can survive three to four days, and most of the animals seemed to be in good health, he said.
A full assessment of all stranded whales is expected later today. The government is urging the general public to stay away, there are plenty of helpers.
