Hundreds of walkers commemorate the drowned Sam of 17: ‘We were very compassionate’

About five hundred people took part in a walk in memory of Sam Hooftman. The 17-year-old boy from Overveen died in an accident last week. His body was found in the Leidsevaart in Haarlem.

Sam’s parents and two brothers watched the walk, which was broadcast live by NH Newsfrom home on television. A family spokeswoman said yesterday that the family appreciates the region’s sympathy for the loss of Sam. “First with the search for him, and later with the laying down of flowers.”

The boy did not come home from a party in Heemstede last week in the night from Wednesday to Thursday. After a search in the Leidsevaart, his body was found in the water on Friday afternoon.

The walk started tonight at 6.30 pm at Heemstede-Aerdenhout station and ended at the Leidsevaart. The Haarlem mayor Wienen and the Bloemendaal mayor Roest walked along. Wienen told NH Nieuws: “Immediately after his disappearance became known, there was an incredible amount of sympathy. A 17-year-old boy. Everyone can imagine: what a drama. Suddenly disappeared and then it turns out he had drowned.”
